Since 1993 four enigmatic figures have bobbed gently on Hamburg’s waters. These are the Lebensweg sculptures by artist Stephan Balkenhol. They stand not on solid ground but on wobbly buoys. Each figure is a single piece of oak. The sculpture and its base are carved from one trunk. They are nine tons each.

The Lebensweg sculptures are more than just art. They are a commentary on life’s uncertainties. They bob uncontrollably. Yet their expressions remain calm. This deliberate contrast is Balkenhol’s genius. The figures are anonymous. Their lack of pose keeps them enigmatic. Balkenhol says his sculptures do not tell stories. They hold secrets for viewers to discover.

Every autumn the Lebensweg sculptures go into winter quarters. They’re taken to the Stackmeisterei on Finkenwerder. There the artist performs a little upkeep. Then they reappear in March. You can find the sculptures at various locations. Look for them in the Elbe near Övelgönne. Check the Serrahn in Bergedorf. See if they’re on the Outer Alster Lake. Maybe they’re bobbing in the south Elbe near Harburg.

Imagine watching these stoic figures. Feel the gentle rocking of the buoys. See the interplay of wood and water. The sculptures are a quiet meditation on the passage of time. They stand as a testament to the enduring power of art. They silently invite contemplation.

The Lebensweg sculptures are more than just wooden men on buoys. They are symbols of resilience. They are a unique part of Hamburg’s artistic heritage. Their mystery makes them all the more fascinating. Go find them and discover their secrets for yourself.
