Have you ever felt the earth tremble beneath your feet? Le Pouce in Mauritius is more than just a mountain. It’s a giant thumbprint of volcanic creation. Rising 812 meters it’s the third highest peak on the island. Only Piton de la Petite Rivière Noire and Pieter Both are taller. Le Pouce. The name itself evokes its unique shape. This thumb-like peak is easily seen from Port Louis. It’s a popular hike offering stunning views.

Le Pouce wasn’t always a tourist attraction. Millions of years ago volcanic eruptions formed the Moka Range. Le Pouce is part of this range a basalt lava dome. It’s no longer active but its history is still felt. The mountain’s age is around ten million years. Ten million years of weathering. Ten million years of stories waiting to be discovered.

Charles Darwin himself ascended Le Pouce on May 2 1836. In his journal he described the island’s unique geology. He questioned theories of crater formation. His observations helped shape our understanding of volcanic islands. He didn’t just climb a mountain. He explored the earth itself.

But Le Pouce’s story is not just geological. It’s intertwined with the human story too. Maroon slaves sought refuge in the mountain’s thick vegetation. They found shelter amidst the guava and acacia trees. Sadly not all survived. Their stories linger on the slopes. The whispers of history are carried on the wind.

Then there’s the Le Pouce Mountain Screwpine. This unique plant is critically endangered. Only two male plants exist. They’re within the Le Pouce Nature Reserve. This reserve created in 1951 protects 0.69 km2. Its preservation efforts demonstrate the importance of nature.

The hike to the summit isn’t overly difficult. But the ascent is steep particularly near the peak. You will get amazing views. You can see Port Louis Moka and Beau-Bassin Rose-Hill. It’s a journey that combines physical challenge with breathtaking rewards. You will have an amazing time hiking this mountain. You can easily spend hours there.

Le Pouce. It’s a mountain with a story. A story etched in rock and woven into the fabric of Mauritian history. It’s a story waiting to be discovered by you. It invites you to explore its past. To climb its heights and discover the breathtaking view. It’s more than a mountain. It’s an experience. It’s Le Pouce.
