Can you feel the raw power? The Le Dompteur de Chevaux sculpture embodies this energy. It depicts a young man struggling to control two restless horses. This bronze masterpiece was created by Thomas Vinçotte in 1885. Le Dompteur de Chevaux, also known as The Horse Tamer or The Charioteer, was originally displayed at the Universal Exhibition of Fine Arts in Antwerp in the same year. The Belgian government promptly purchased it. It first stood proudly on Avenue Louise, gracing a roundabout. Around 1910, urban development led to its relocation. Avenue Émile De Mot was being extended, and Avenue Louise was being modified. Le Dompteur de Chevaux found its new home at the intersection of Avenue Émile De Mot and Avenue Émile Duray, close to the serene gardens of La Cambre Abbey. The sculpture sits on a pedestal designed by architect Edmond Le Graive in 1908. This dynamic artwork captures a moment of intense struggle. The young man strains every muscle. The horses rear and snort, their bronze muscles rippling with tension. The Compagnie des Bronzes cast the sculpture. It is one of the first Belgian open-air sculptures to feature an animal subject. The artist’s signature and the foundry mark are discreetly placed on the bronze. “THOMAS VINÇOTTE 1885” and “Cie des Bronzes Bruxelles” affirm its authenticity. Le Dompteur de Chevaux is more than just a statue. It’s a testament to the power of both man and nature. It also represents the changing urban landscape of Brussels.
