Sculpted in bronze, Le 48e Mobile stands as a poignant reminder of a bygone era. This statue, originally located near the Haute-Deule footbridge in Lille, commemorates the 48th Mobile Regiment of the Nord. Le 48e Mobile isn’t just a statue; it’s a resurrected memory. Commissioned by Lieutenant Colonel Decoutin and recognized by General Faidherbe, the original monument was unveiled in 1913, funded by the regiment’s veterans. Tragically, Le 48e Mobile fell victim to the destruction of World War I, torn down by German forces in 1917. The story doesn’t end there. A new Le 48e Mobile, crafted by Aimé Blaise, rose in 1928, finding a new home on Rue de Solférino. This location, near the Jardin d’Arboriculture, proved temporary. By 1957, Blaise’s Le 48e Mobile was moved to the Palais Rameau. It remained there, almost forgotten, until its rediscovery in 1966. There were even talks of its reinstatement to a more prominent place. The inscription on the pedestal tells its own story: “AU / 48° REGT MOBILE / DU NORD / COMMANDE PAR LE / LIEUTt COLONEL DECOUTIN / PORTE A L’ORDRE DU … / PAR LE / GENERAL FAIDHERBE”. The sculptor of the original 1913 Le 48e Mobile, Raymond Albert Germain, captured the spirit of the regiment. His bronze creation, though lost, continues to resonate through its successor and the story of its survival. Le 48e Mobile is more than just bronze and stone; it is the embodiment of remembrance, resilience, and the enduring spirit of Lille.
