Ever heard of the Landesbund für Vogel- und Naturschutz in Bayern? The LBV Bamberg is its local branch a true champion for nature conservation in this region. Right here in front of us stands a testament to their dedication the Umweltstation Fuchsenwiese.

Established in 1909 in Bamberg the LBV initially focused solely on bird protection. It was then known as the “Staatlich autorisierte Vogelschutzkommission” a state-authorized bird protection commission. Imagine a time when protecting birds was a novel concept. The LBV Bamberg played a pivotal role in the early days championing this cause in the heart of Bavaria.

The early years saw the LBV Bamberg deeply intertwined with the Bavarian state government. All LBV chairmen from 1920 to 1978 were also Bavarian state officials. This close relationship shaped the organization’s evolution. The LBV Bamberg however developed independence over time. Its focus broadened from birds to encompassing all aspects of nature conservation.

By 1927 nearly 3000 Bavarian municipalities were corporate members of the LBV. The organization moved from Bamberg to Garmisch in 1931. The shift to Garmisch led to the establishment of a bird observatory in the Kurpark. The Garmisch-Partenkirchen bird observatory was eventually taken over by the state to save the LBV from financial ruin.

The LBV Bamberg’s growth and its increasing independence are impressive. In the 1970s membership soared reflecting a growing societal awareness of environmental issues. Today the LBV Bamberg boasts a strong network of local groups a dedicated team and a broad range of activities.

The Umweltstation Fuchsenwiese itself is a fantastic example of the LBV’s work. Opened in 1996 this environmental education center is a hub for local initiatives. Children adults and anyone passionate about nature find countless opportunities to connect with the natural world. The Fuchsenwiese is dedicated to wildlife education conservation programs.

The LBV’s dedication goes beyond local efforts. It participates in national and international conservation initiatives. The LBV has spearheaded numerous projects including five EU LIFE projects more than any other association in Germany. It runs conservation programs for species such as the marsh harrier white stork eagle owl peregrine falcon and ortolan bunting.

Witnessing the LBV’s dedication to this environment is inspiring. The LBV Bamberg has evolved from a small bird protection commission to a leading force in Bavarian nature conservation. Its success lies in its deep roots in the community its commitment to education and its forward-thinking approach to environmental challenges. Today the LBV Bamberg continues to adapt evolving to meet the complexities of modern environmental issues. The LBV Bamberg isn’t just protecting birds and nature it’s safeguarding our collective future.
