The Laxey River’s name itself tells a story. Laxa is Old Norse for Salmon River. For generations salmon have fought their way upstream choosing the Glen Roy tributary during autumn. This tributary and the Axnfell Plantation offer superb fishing opportunities. Experienced anglers can try their luck with worming or spinning.
The Laxey River isn’t just about nature’s beauty. Its power fueled Laxey’s industrial past. The river’s strong current once powered water mills and most notably the Laxey Wheel. This giant waterwheel built in 1854 is the largest working waterwheel in the world. Originally designed to pump water from the Great Laxey Mine it’s now a beloved tourist attraction. Edwin Kneale a local man saved the wheel from demolition. He ran it as a tourist attraction before gifting it to the Manx nation ensuring its continued operation.
Imagine the miners who relied on the Laxey River. The river helped power the mines that once dominated Laxey’s economy. Lead zinc silver ore and even copper pyrites were extracted from the Great Laxey Mine. Over 600 men worked in the mines around the turn of the 20th century. The mines operated until 1929. Flooding combined with outdated equipment brought an end to this era. Some spoil residue was processed until 1934 extracting any remaining valuable minerals.
Today the Laxey River flows gently towards the sea. Walk along its banks and appreciate the historical significance of this once powerful force. Notice the quaint village nestled around the river. Explore Laxey’s harbour a small but charming port built in the 1850s. The harbour now serves leisure boats and inshore fishing vessels. Laxey Bay itself is a protected Marine Nature Reserve.
