Did Laxey always have just one Methodist Church? No. Let’s unravel the tale of Laxey Methodist Church, a story woven from the threads of three earlier chapels. We stand before the present-day Laxey Methodist Church. It wasn’t always this way. This building began its life as the Minorca Primitive Methodist Chapel’s Sunday School, built in 1898. Imagine Laxey in the 19th century. Methodists gathered in various chapels scattered across the village. There was the Shore Road Primitive Methodist Chapel, built in 1825. It served the community until its closure in 1870. Then came the Glen Road Wesleyan Methodist Chapel, opening its doors in 1850. Another chapel, the Minorca Primitive Methodist Chapel, arose in 1870, just across the road from its Sunday School. These chapels thrived for decades, echoing with hymns and sermons. But by the mid-20th century, times were changing. In 1966, both Glen Road and Minorca Chapels closed their doors. The congregations merged. The faithful sought a new home. They found it in the former Sunday School building of the Minorca Chapel. In 1970, this building was reborn as the new, unified Laxey Methodist Church. This building, then, represents not just one chapel, but the combined spirit of three. It’s a testament to the enduring faith of the Laxey Methodists, adapting to change while keeping their traditions alive. Today, Laxey Methodist Church continues to serve the community. It embraces new forms of worship. Café-style services, all-age worship with puppets, and multimedia presentations all find a place within these walls. So, the next time you visit Laxey Methodist Church, remember its layered history. It’s more than just a building. It’s a living testament to the enduring power of faith, community, and adaptation.
