The world’s largest working waterwheel. That’s what they call the Laxey Wheel. It’s right here in Laxey.

Laxey a picturesque village on the Isle of Man’s east coast boasts a rich history. Its charm stems from a unique blend of mining heritage and stunning natural beauty. The village’s name itself originates from the Old Norse word “laxa” meaning “salmon river”. This refers to the Laxey River which flows from Snaefell Mountain down to the picturesque bay.

For centuries Laxey was a quiet cluster of cottages. Then in around 1780 lead zinc and copper were discovered. Mining transformed Laxey. Waterwheels shafts and winding houses appeared. The landscape changed dramatically. Hundreds of new homes and businesses sprang up to serve the growing population. The mines operated until 1930. Amazingly all the mining waste was removed during World War II. This waste was used for constructing runways for new fighter stations in the north of the island. This prevented Laxey from being scarred by the typical waste heaps associated with mining areas.

The Laxey Wheel built in 1854 is the star of Laxey. It’s also known as Lady Isabella. This impressive structure pumped water from the deep mines. It still turns today a testament to engineering ingenuity. The wheel’s diameter is 72 feet 6 inches. Its width is 6 feet. Robert Casement designed this marvel. For many years it was privately owned. Ed Kneale prevented its demolition. He operated it as a tourist attraction. He eventually gifted it to the Manx nation.

Laxey offers more than just the wheel. A wide sandy beach stretches out at low tide. Rock pools delight children. There is even a bathing raft for when the tide is high. The Laxey Glen gardens opened in 1875. They featured dance floors bandstands and a croquet lawn. Laxey also boasts the Laxey Woollen Mills. These mills established in 1881 still operate. They create Manx tartan a fabric woven from high-quality Manx Loaghtan wool. The Manx Electric Railway provides a scenic route to Laxey. It’s a delightful Victorian tram journey. This is one of the oldest electric tram lines in the world.

Laxey’s story is one of transformation. From a small fishing village to a thriving mining community and finally a popular tourist destination. This remarkable village has preserved its unique identity. It continues to captivate visitors with its blend of history natural beauty and industrial heritage. Come visit Laxey.
