“Reaching A Higher Level In Jesus Christ.” That’s the motto of Law Street Baptist Church. It stands as a testament to faith and resilience. The church’s story is deeply intertwined with the history of New Orleans.
Law Street Baptist Church started as the Pure Light Baptist Church. This was between 1931 and 1943. The congregation later split. In 1944, the church was reborn with only eight members. They built a new home at 3132 Law Street and named it Law Street Baptist Church.
In 1944, Rev. Eddie B. Scott, Sr. became the first pastor. He served until his death in 1978. During his leadership, the church experienced significant growth. In 1948, the church was officially organized at its Law Street location. That same year, they expanded with an educational building.
Disaster struck in 1965 when Hurricane Betsy hit. The church suffered damage. Sadly, many records were lost. Despite this setback, the congregation persevered. In 1974, they purchased two lots next to the church. In 1978, a new church building was constructed on Law Street.
Rev. Joseph T. Benoit, Sr. took over as pastor in 1979. He served until 1995. Then, in 1996, Rev. Johnny R. Arvie was elected. He brought a message of healing and encouragement. He reminded everyone that they could do all things through Christ.
Law Street Baptist Church obtained 501c-3 nonprofit status in 2002. Then came Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The church and city were flooded with ten feet of water. The building was a total loss. Members scattered across the country.
Pastor Arvie, then living in Waco, Texas, organized a reunion service in Crowley, Louisiana in 2006. In January 2006, he returned to New Orleans. Services resumed in February 2006 at Rising Star Baptist Church. By November 2006, Law Street Baptist Church returned to its renovated building. Friends and family helped rebuild. Pastor Arvie believed the Lord wanted them back at 3132 Law Street.
