Opened in 1964, Laval City Hall isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to Laval’s forward-thinking spirit. Did you know its modern design won the first architectural competition in Quebec? Laval City Hall stands as a symbol of the city’s unique identity, separate from the bustling metropolis of Montreal across the Rivière des Prairies. The building itself reflects the city’s growth. The amalgamation of fourteen municipalities in 1965 created the city of Laval. This unity is echoed in the interconnected letters of the Laval logo, displayed proudly on the city’s flag. The flag’s colors hold deeper meaning too. Dark red symbolizes Laval’s economic strength, while blue signifies the quality of life. Laval City Hall’s distinctive “L” shaped structure, formed by interconnecting cubes, further symbolizes the city’s continuous development. Laval City Hall also speaks to the city’s dedication to preserving its heritage. The building is currently undergoing a much-needed restoration. This project will modernize the facilities while respecting its original architectural significance. The selective interior demolition phase began in early 2024. It involves carefully dismantling electromechanical systems, stripping, and decontamination. This meticulous process underscores the commitment to maintaining Laval City Hall’s historical integrity. While the restoration is in progress, city hall operations have been temporarily relocated to 3131 Saint-Martin Boulevard West. This allows the restoration team to work diligently, ensuring that Laval City Hall remains a vibrant landmark for generations to come. The building, even amidst renovations, embodies the city’s motto: “Unity, Progress, Greatness.” Laval City Hall is more than just a municipal building. It’s a reflection of Laval’s past, present, and future.
