Dreaming of quiet streets and Tudor-style homes? Then you’re in the right place in Laurelton. Laurelton is a unique neighborhood in Queens. It offers a blend of suburban charm and city convenience.

Laurelton’s story begins with a vision. Developer Henry O. Havemeyer imagined an affluent suburban community here in the early 1900s. He named it Laurelton, inspired by the laurel trees that flourished. The Long Island Rail Road station also took the name. It is named for the laurels that grew there over 100 years ago.

Originally, Laurelton was part of the Dutch colony of New Netherland. It was mainly farmland until the 20th century. Joseph H. Lefrak, another developer, bought land in the 1920s. He continued building Laurelton into a suburban haven.

Laurelton was designed to resemble an English village. Stately Tudor-style homes were constructed. These homes, both attached and detached, give Laurelton its distinct character. You will not find high-rise buildings here. This maintains Laurelton’s small-town feel.

Over time, Laurelton transformed into a diverse community. After the 1930s, many Jewish-American families called Laurelton home. Later, Laurelton became one of the first integrated neighborhoods in Queens. African American residents moved here during the Civil Rights Movement. Today, Laurelton is known for its diversity.

The neighborhood is largely middle class. It has a population of over 24,000 residents. Laurelton is home to many African-Americans, Caribbean, and West Indian families.

Merrick Boulevard serves as Laurelton’s commercial spine. This street bisects the community, running east to west. Springfield Boulevard, 121st Avenue, Laurelton Parkway, and Conduit Avenue also border Laurelton. Francis Lewis Boulevard is another major thoroughfare.

Laurelton offers green spaces like Brookville Park. Residents enjoy outdoor activities here. The neighborhood also features local shops and businesses.

Many notable people have called Laurelton home. Paul Simon of Simon and Garfunkel once lived here. Rapper Ja Rule also hails from Laurelton. Shirley Chisholm, the first Black woman elected to Congress, was a resident. Captain Kangaroo, Bob Keeshan, lived here too.

Laurelton provides convenient transportation options. The Laurelton station offers service to Manhattan. Several bus routes connect Laurelton to subway lines. The Belt Parkway also provides access to the neighborhood.

Laurelton is a neighborhood with a unique history. Its architecture, diversity, and notable residents contribute to its charm. Take a stroll through Laurelton’s streets. Experience the blend of suburban peace and city life. It’s a place where community thrives.
