Picture this. You’re standing before Laurel Park Place a sprawling shopping mall in Livonia Michigan. It’s not just any mall though. It’s a time capsule of Detroit’s retail history.

Laurel Park Place opened in 1989. This wasn’t just another shopping center. It boasted a Marriott hotel an office tower and a massive Jacobson’s department store. This Jacobson’s was the largest in their entire chain a true anchor for the community. The mall wasn’t just a place to shop. It was a destination a hub of activity.

Imagine the excitement of its grand opening. Families flocked to this new retail haven. Jacobson’s reigned supreme for years. But retail trends shift. Jacobson’s declared bankruptcy closing its doors in 2002. A year later Von Maur stepped in filling the void. The mall adapted evolving with the times.

In 2004 Laurel Park Place achieved impressive sales figures. It exceeded the benchmark for Class A mall properties a testament to its success. That’s not all. In 2007 the mall became one of the first in the Detroit area to install large televisions throughout the space. These screens showcased ads for the mall’s stores. A food court was added in 2008 adjacent to the hotel. Sadly this food court is now mostly abandoned.

Another big change came in 2013. Parisian a department store within Laurel Park Place rebranded itself as Carson’s. This wasn’t the end of the story though. Sadly Carson’s parent company The Bon-Ton Stores went bankrupt. The Carson’s at Laurel Park Place closed in 2018. But even this closure marked a new beginning. Dunham’s Sports opened in the former Carson’s space in 2019.

Laurel Park Place continues its evolution. It’s a place of constant change. It’s a reminder that even in the face of challenges retail spaces adapt and reinvent themselves. Today Laurel Park Place with its mix of stores restaurants and amenities continues to be a vital part of the Livonia community. It stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of adaptation and renewal in a constantly evolving retail landscape.
