“A scar of war, you say?” a voice whispered, echoing slightly off the stone. We’re standing before the Laufer Torturm, a silent sentinel in Nuremberg’s heart. Don’t let its sturdy presence fool you. This tower has seen its share of battles. The Laufer Torturm, built in the 14th century, once stood as one of 128 towers guarding Nuremberg. Today, it’s one of only four round towers remaining from the city’s impressive fortifications. The tower rises over 130 feet, a beacon of strength in a city that has known its share of turmoil. The Laufer Torturm took a significant blow during the Second Margrave War in 1552. The damage was so severe that it had to be encased in a round shell for protection. Today, the original square structure still exists, hidden beneath this added layer of defense. Over the centuries, the Laufer Torturm has served many roles, from storage to even a civil defense shelter during World War II. While it’s no longer in active use, the tower remains a stoic symbol of Nuremberg’s resilience. It’s a reminder of the city’s ability to rebuild and adapt, while still holding onto its past.
