Louise Lathrup Kelley had a vision. Right here in what is now Lathrup Village, she envisioned a planned community, a place where innovative ideas could flourish. Lathrup Village, a charming inner-ring suburb of Detroit, was born from that vision in 1923. Originally part of Southfield Township, Lathrup Village became its own incorporated city in 1953, a testament to Kelley’s determination and the residents’ desire for a unique identity. Lathrup Village wasn’t just about houses. It was about creating a lifestyle. Kelley insisted on masonry construction for homes, integrated attached garages early on, and set minimum construction costs to ensure quality. As the community grew, Kelley introduced a shuttle service to local shops and even allowed car financing to be bundled with home mortgages, a truly innovative concept at the time. She brought in talented architects, helped by her husband, a real estate writer for the Detroit News, to design distinctive custom homes. This careful planning resulted in Lathrup Village becoming a National Register Historic District in 1998. The district includes around 1,200 properties, showcasing a blend of architectural styles, from Colonial Revival and Tudor to ranch houses, all woven together by a distinctive street pattern. This pattern blends geometric and curvilinear designs, creating unexpected views and charming triangular parks. Lathrup Village is more than just pretty houses. It’s a reflection of a woman’s pioneering spirit, a place where innovation met community. It’s a village that holds a special place in the history of Detroit’s suburbs.
