“Ever wonder how a school can shape a community?” That’s precisely what Lasalle Elementary Senior has been doing for years here in Montreal. This isn’t just any school. It’s a place where young minds grow. It is a warm and welcoming environment for children.
Lasalle Elementary Senior places great emphasis on student well-being. The school has initiatives to help students feel good. These initiatives extend to both school and home.
Back in the 1950s Ville Lasalle was still relatively undeveloped. There was no Lasalle Hospital or Civic Centre. There was no high school either. It was a big change for families moving in. Many young families made the move. It seemed like a great place to raise children.
Lasalle College started in the LaSalle borough. This gave the college its name. The college’s first program was in secretarial training. They taught Speedwriting. They also taught Nancy Taylor’s charm course. Jean-Paul Morin created the first fashion school in Canada in 1973.
Lasalle Elementary Senior has specialists in various fields. Ms. Dara Weiss teaches music. Mr. Micheal Apa and Mr. Michael Putre teach gym. Mme Marie-France Fitzgerald teaches art. Ms. Shelley Izzard is the Special Education Technician. Mme Dominique Laurence is also a Special Education Technician. Ms. Tara Prokosh is the French Resource teacher. Ms. Chelsea Weiner and Nandi Whittaker are English Resource teachers.
One notable thing about the area was the old telephone system. Before modern dialing, prefixes identified neighborhoods. Dominic was a prefix in use from 1959 to the early sixties. Elwood was used between 1925 and 1958.
Growing up in Ville Lasalle created lasting memories. The MonMart on Champlain was a popular spot. People remember BBQ chickens on Friday nights. Steinberg’s sold them for 99 cents. The Miracle Mart was across the street. The best smoked meat was on Lasalle Blvd.
