A colossal woman lounging in a lake? Right here in Hamburg, the Large standing woman, also known as “Die Badende” or “The Bather,” once made a splash, quite literally. This enormous sculpture, the work of German artist Oliver Voss, temporarily transformed the Inner Alster Lake into the world’s largest bathtub. The Large standing woman wasn’t a permanent resident. She graced the lake for only ten days as a rather unusual advertisement for Soap & Glory, a British beauty products company. Towering at 13 feet out of the water and stretching a full 67 feet in length, she was hard to miss. The sculpture weighed over two tons. Imagine a figure so large, her knees jutting out of the water, creating a curious obstacle for boaters. People flocked to the lake, renting paddleboats just to get a closer look at this bathing behemoth. While tourists were awestruck, not everyone appreciated this artistic intrusion. Some locals felt the Large standing woman sullied their beloved lake. After her brief soak, “The Bather” was hoisted out by a crane. A giant towel was reportedly waiting to dry her off, which was probably needed after a 10-day dip in the lake.
