How does a butterfly weighing over eight tons feel? Right here before us stands the Large Divided Oval: Butterfly a monumental bronze sculpture by Henry Moore. This isn’t just any artwork. It’s a testament to artistic genius and a symbol of Berlin’s resilience.

The Large Divided Oval: Butterfly wasn’t merely placed here. It arrived in 1987 during Berlin’s 750th anniversary celebrations. This majestic work arrived as a grand gesture. It marked the reopening of the Haus der Kulturen der Welt. Henry Moore himself a renowned sculptor began work on this piece in 1985. Tragically it became his final creation.

He sadly passed away while the Large Divided Oval: Butterfly was still being cast. He never got to see his masterpiece in its final resting place. The city of Berlin acquired this bronze sculpture for a hefty 3.5 million DM. This made it one of the most expensive public art acquisitions in the city’s history.

The sculpture’s placement is ingenious. It appears to float effortlessly above a reflecting pond. This enhances the impression of weightlessness and flight. The curved forms resemble a pair of wings bringing the image of a butterfly to life in a captivating way. It’s truly a breathtaking sight.

In the spring of 2010 the Large Divided Oval: Butterfly underwent a complete restoration. It received a new patina and a thorough polishing. The team at Bildgießerei Noack skillfully returned it to its former bronze glory. It now stands gleaming a testament to skilled craftsmanship and preservation efforts. This project was a remarkable effort involving many supporters including the Friends of the House of World Cultures.

The Large Divided Oval: Butterfly is more than just a sculpture. It represents the spirit of Berlin its unwavering commitment to art and its enduring legacy. Stand here a moment. Let the beauty and history of this stunning work wash over you. It is a truly unforgettable experience.
