Have you ever heard of a Marilyn? Not the Hollywood icon, but a hill with a prominence of over 150 meters. Lapo Hill, also known as Bukit Lagong, boasts not one, but two such Marilyns within its hiking trails. Located on the edge of Kuala Lumpur, Lapo Hill offers a surprising escape into nature, despite its proximity to the city. It’s a vital forest corridor between the Titiwangsa Range and the Klang Valley, and arguably Kuala Lumpur’s highest hill, reaching an elevation of 572 meters. Multiple trails crisscross its slopes. One popular route begins on Jalan Bukit Lagong, near an Orang Asli village known for its river bathing. From a somewhat unremarkable track opposite a parking area, hikers can follow an old logging route to several viewpoints overlooking the city. For the more adventurous, a detour onto a smaller track leads over a stream and connects with a trail from the Orang Asli village. This path winds through an interior valley, past small stream crossings and Orang Asli huts, towards the col between the logging road viewpoints and Lapo Hill’s true summit. At the col, marked with signs for “Bukit Nolang” and “Beirut Bukit Lagong,” a single trail leads to the summit. While the summit itself offers no views, the journey there includes a shallow river crossing, a surprisingly wild experience for an urban hike. The descent via Bukit Nolang is recommended. This 502-meter Marilyn features a rest area with a slightly misleading “Bukit Lagong” sign. Continuing down, hikers will find popular viewpoints and eventually rejoin the logging road for an easy stroll back to the trailhead. The entire circuit, including both Marilyns, takes approximately four hours without breaks.
