Gazing at the Laoshan Bridge evokes a sense of awe. This towering structure pierces the sky. It stands as a testament to engineering prowess. But what makes this bridge so special?

The Laoshan Bridge is not in Beijing. It is located near Sandu in Guizhou, China. It is part of the G76 expressway. This expressway stretches from Xiamen to Chengdu. The Laoshan Bridge may seem like one of many beam bridges along this route. Yet it possesses a unique grandeur.

Completed in 2010 the Laoshan Bridge rises 140 meters high. Its piers support the bridge high above a deep creek. Just a few kilometers west is the Houzihe beam bridge. That bridge soars even higher. It reaches 220 meters.

China uses swivel construction for many bridges. This method minimizes traffic interference. It helps overcome environmental constraints. It also shortens the construction period. One such bridge rotated 52.4 degrees in 68 minutes. The bridge weighed 46000 tonnes. It was 263.6 meters long. This happened in Baoding, Hebei Province.

The swivel bridge used a spherical hinge. This hinge supported the rotating body. The hinge’s diameter reached 6.5 meters. This set a new world record.

The Marco Polo Bridge near Beijing also called Lugou Bridge has a rich history. It is known for its countless carved lions. Marco Polo described it as stunning. The original bridge was built in the 12th century. It was later reconstructed in 1698. The Marco Polo Bridge stretches 266.5 meters long. It has 281 pillars. Each pillar features stone lions. The number of lions varies. Estimates range from 482 to 496. Originally there were 627 lions.

Emperor Kangxi reconstructed the bridge in 1698. Emperor Qianlong wrote about it. His calligraphy reads Morning moon over Lugou. The bridge is an architectural masterpiece. It uses solid granite. Triangular iron pillars protect it from floods.

Laoshan Mountain near Qingdao is a famous Taoist mountain. It is known for its beautiful scenery. It has temples and waterfalls. The mountain is called No. 1 coastal mountain. Key scenic spots include Taiqing and Yangkou. Jufeng Peak is the highest point.

So, while the Laoshan Bridge near Sandu may be lesser known it stands as an impressive feat of engineering. Its height and location make it a remarkable structure.
