Lantian

Established in 379 BCE Lantian County boasts a rich history. It’s named after the nearby Lantian Mountain. This mountain was famed for its jade as ancient texts attest. Imagine the skilled artisans shaping this precious stone. Lantian’s location is strategic. It borders several important cities. Weinan and Shangluo are to the northeast and southeast respectively. Lintong District sits to the north. Chang’an District is to the west. Baqiao District is to the northwest. Lantian’s journey wasn’t always straightforward. From 446 CE to 487 CE it was merged into Bacheng County. Later under the Northern Zhou dynasty Lantian was briefly reorganized as a commandery. This oversaw Yushan and Bailu Counties. These were later reabsorbed into Lantian. The county’s administrative seat shifted several times. It was moved to Yaoliu then to the present location. The county saw changes during the Ming and Qing dynasties. It fell under Xi’an Fu’s jurisdiction. The establishment of the Republic of China saw it placed under Guanzhong Circuit. Then under Shaanxi province’s direct rule in 1928. After the People’s Republic of China’s founding in 1949 Lantian went through several administrative shifts. It’s now under Xi’an. In 2011 its townships were reorganized into towns. In 2015 three towns merged. Languan town became the sole subdistrict. The county’s population fluctuated over time. A 1996 estimate put it around 605000. The 2000 census recorded 560283. A 2010 census showed 514026. A 2012 estimate placed it at 518800. Lantian’s climate is defined by its mean daily maximum temperature. It ranges from 5.0 degrees Celsius in January to 32.7 degrees Celsius in July. Annual rainfall is substantial.
