Can you imagine the busy streets of Brisbane in the late 1800s? The Langshaw Marble Lime Works, right here, was a key player in building this city. It wasn’t just one building; it was a complex of factories, workshops and a timber wharf. It was the brainchild of James Campbell, a building materials pioneer who saw the potential for a city whose growth demanded a steady supply of lime. Back then, buildings weren’t made of concrete, but of brick and mortar, relying heavily on lime for strong foundations.

The Langshaw Marble Lime Works was a bustling hive of activity. Huge ships arrived at the wharf, laden with limestone from the surrounding areas. Workers would unload the stones and use them to fuel the massive brick and stone kilns. These kilns, two D-shaped sets, burned the limestone at 1,000 degrees Celsius for three straight days, turning the rocks into lime. This process, practiced throughout Australia in the 19th century, gave bricks the strength they needed to build homes and stores. But it was a dirty business, with thick plumes of smoke billowing into the air, as the kilns worked tirelessly producing the essential ingredient for the city’s growth.

James Campbell and his sons weren’t just providing lime; they were a major supplier of building materials. Their business, James Campbell and Sons, expanded to include timber, brick and paint as Brisbane continued to grow. They acquired sawmills, built wharves and even a pottery factory, becoming a giant amongst Brisbane’s merchants. Although the Langshaw Marble Lime Works fell silent by the early 1890s, its legacy lives on in the buildings that still stand in Brisbane. Next time you walk along Queen Street or admire the beautiful old architecture of the city, remember the contribution of this important industrial site on the banks of the Brisbane River.
