From a small marketplace called “Hanovere” in 1150, Langenhagen has witnessed centuries of change. Langenhagen’s story is intertwined with Hanover’s, a city it borders. Langenhagen, however, maintains its own distinct identity and infrastructure. In the 20th century, Langenhagen became a crucial crossroads. A railroad in 1890 and a port on the Mittelland Canal in 1916 facilitated trade and transportation. The construction of the motorway in the mid-1930s further cemented its importance. This era also saw the creation of the Silbersee (Silver Lake). Pilots, it’s said, used the lake as a navigational landmark on their flights to Berlin, giving it its shimmering name. Langenhagen was not spared the devastation of World War II. Two-thirds of the town was destroyed by bombings. Yet, Langenhagen persevered. The post-war period was a time of rapid growth. Langenhagen officially became a city in 1959. In 1974, its boundaries expanded to encompass the area we know today. Langenhagen holds a unique place in music history. In 1982, the world’s first mass production of compact discs began right here in Langenhagen. This marked a pivotal moment in the evolution of music consumption. Langenhagen also played a role in the fight against terrorism. In 1972, Red Army Faction terrorist Ulrike Meinhof was arrested in Langenhagen. This event underscored the town’s unexpected connection to global events. Today, Langenhagen is a vibrant town with a rich cultural scene. It’s known for its cabaret and comedy, its thriving arts community, and its annual theater festival, Mimuse. From its humble beginnings as a marketplace to its role in technological and historical events, Langenhagen’s story continues to unfold.
