A twelve-meter-long elephant tusk. That’s what first drew me to Lang Ong Thuy Tuong. This isn’t just any shrine. It’s a place steeped in history and local legend a testament to the deep-rooted spiritual beliefs of the Can Gio people.

Lang Ong Thuy Tuong sits peacefully at the end of Duyên Hải Road in Can Thành ward Can Gio district. It’s a significant spiritual and tourist destination attracting many visitors especially during local holidays. The shrine’s importance goes beyond its spiritual value. It’s intrinsically linked to the lives of the Can Gio coastal community.

The massive elephant tusk nicknamed the “ngà cốt” is a centerpiece. It’s carefully preserved within a glass enclosure a unique sight. The Ho Chi Minh City Museum has been responsible for its conservation since 2001. This tusk isn’t simply a curious natural artifact. It holds profound spiritual meaning for locals adding to the site’s allure.

The tusk was found in 1971. Local fishermen discovered it embedded in the mud. Legend says the elephant god Ca Ong sent it as a sign of protection. This tale reflects the community’s deep connection with the sea. It’s a story passed down through generations.

Beyond the elephant god Ca Ong the shrine also houses other sea deities. Ha Ba Thuy Quang and Ngoc Lan are honored here. They are prayed to for safe journeys bountiful harvests and the wellbeing of fishermen.

The significance of Lang Ong Thuy Tuong isn’t lost on the local authorities. In 2012 the shrine was officially classified as a city-level architectural and artistic relic. This recognition highlights its cultural importance. It’s a place where history spirituality and community intertwine.

Local resident Ong Lê Văn No has worked at Lang Ong Thuy Tuong since 1997. He guides visitors shares stories and helps maintain the shrine. He told me that the shrine sees a steady stream of visitors every day. Weekends are particularly busy.

Every August the area hosts the Nghinh Ông festival. This traditional celebration honors Ca Ong and the other sea gods. It’s a vibrant display of local culture. The festival runs from the 14th to the 17th of the eighth month of the lunar calendar.

Lang Ong Thuy Tuong is more than just a shrine. It’s a living story a cultural landmark and a reminder of the strong connection between the Can Gio people and their environment. It’s a testament to the enduring power of faith and tradition a place to leave your worries and appreciate the beauty of a rich coastal culture. So let’s take a moment here to admire this remarkable place.
