Picture this a landscape etched by time. Before you stands the Landwehr des Kirchspiels Nienberge a relic of Münster’s medieval past. This isn’t just a ditch and a wall. It’s a silent story whispering tales of conflict and community.

The Landwehr des Kirchspiels Nienberge is part of a larger network. These fortifications were built by the Prince-Bishop of Münster. They protected the parishes from encroaching powers. Primarily the Counts of Steinfurt were the aggressors.

The construction started sometime during the 14th century. This was a period of intense feuds between Münster’s bishops and the Steinfurt counts. Bishop Ludwig of Münster ordered the building of these defenses. He decreed that the parishes needed protection. He called them a ‘munico que lantwere vulgariter appellatur’ a fortification commonly known as a Landwehr. The Landwehr’s first mention is in 1395. This was during a boundary survey. A document describes it as “… lantwere bylanck van Bletynctorpe…”.

Even 250 years later the Landwehr still served its purpose. Prince-Bishop Christoph Bernhard von Galen inspected his territories around 1650. Three delegates from the cathedral chapter followed. They inspected the borders of the Meest Bakenfeld and Telgte courts. Altenberge was one of these. Their detailed records from 1653 give us a remarkably precise map of the Landwehr. We can still follow its path today.

Construction was labor-intensive. People from the parishes dug ditches. They used spades not shovels. The earth was piled high forming a wall. Thorny bushes were planted. This made the Landwehr difficult to cross. The ditches weren’t permanently flooded. Only heavy rain or snowmelt filled them. The Steinfurter Aa and the Landwehrbach were exceptions. They were permanently water-filled parts of the border.

A single worker could only build about one meter of wall and ditch per day. Thirty workers could build about ten meters a day. Allowing for breaks and bad weather they could build around three kilometers of Landwehr per year. Planting took even longer.

Today much of the Landwehr is gone. Ploughed fields cover much of it. The remaining sections are protected. They are historical monuments and unique biotopes. The walls and ditches are less high and deep than in the Middle Ages. Yet they still stand as a testament to the people who built them. A reminder of the conflicts they faced and the community they protected. The Landwehr des Kirchspiels Nienberge is more than just a historical site. It’s a living story.
