Curious about the history of this impressive building? Landschulheim Schloss Ising has a story that stretches back centuries. It began as a simple farm in the early 1800s. This farm was called Untermaierhof. Untermaierhof itself originated from a Roman estate. This Roman estate was known as Usinga, a villa rustica.

Around 1870, the Royal Bavarian Cavalry Captain Baron Franz von Liel transformed it. He gave it a castle-like appearance. In 1892, Major Leo Czermak acquired the building. He was the president of the Royal Bavarian Automobile Club. Czermak further expanded the structure. He added Gothic elements such as a crenellated tower and dormers.

A fire in 1923 damaged the estate. In 1934, the Witt-Magalow industrial family from Weiden purchased Gut Ising. They renovated the building extensively. They also refurnished it with great taste. After World War II, American forces seized the castle.

In 1953, the building began to be used as a school. In 1955, the Zweckverband Bayerische Landschulheime purchased it. Since then, it has been used as a boarding school. Landschulheim Schloss Ising is a unique public Gymnasium with an integrated boarding school. It is one of only 15 boarding schools in Bavaria that fulfill the legal requirements of Article 106 BayEUG. In the school year 2023/2024, 461 students attended the school.

Classes started on September 19, 1953. There were only 18 students then. The Magalow family initially leased the castle to the school. In 1955, the Isinger “Anstalt” received final approval. The Zweckverband purchased the castle and its 20,000 square meter grounds. The institution was then named Landschulheim Schloss Ising. At that time it was an Oberrealschule with Realgymnasium. Already 100 students were attending the boarding school.

In 1957, a residential building with living areas was built. It also contained utility rooms and a dining hall. The first 23 students passed their Abitur exams in 1960. A school building with 16 classrooms was added in 1961. This also included special rooms and living areas in the southern part of the castle park. In the same year, the Schneiderhof was acquired. This is today’s Amalienhof. It has a lakefront property in Arlaching and serves as a boarding house. An all-weather sports field was also built. The Verein der Freunde und Förderer der Isinger Schule financed a tennis court. It was built in the large park of Amalienhof in autumn 1962.

The first gymnasium with a theater stage and foyer was built in 1964. Before that, physical education took place in the basement of the residential building. In the same year, the friends association financed a boathouse. This was on the grounds of Amalienhof. This laid the foundation for water sports at Ising.

The residential building and dining hall were expanded in 1968. The following year, a grass sports field with a 400-meter track was added. Before that, running competitions took place on the paved community road. A school pavilion was erected in 1972. A Kollegstufenbau was added in 1976 and a gymnastics hall in 1978. The second gymnasium was built in 1981. In 1998, a new school building with an auditorium was constructed. Two beach volleyball courts were added. They were on the site of the grass sports field. The new school building was expanded in 2006. The auditorium was also enlarged.

On the school grounds stands a large horse sculpture. It is from the “Walking Horses” trilogy by Josef Thorak. Today, Landschulheim Schloss Ising offers different educational paths. These include a linguistic Gymnasium and a science and technology-oriented Gymnasium. There is also a business and social science-oriented Gymnasium.
