Can you believe that a highway led to this green oasis? I’m talking about the Landschaftspark Rudow-Altglienicke. It’s Berlin’s brilliant solution to compensate for the A113 Autobahn expansion. This park connects the districts of Rudow and Altglienicke. These districts were once divided by the Berlin Wall.

The Landschaftspark Rudow-Altglienicke officially opened in May 2009. It covers a massive 64 hectares. The park serves as a green connection. It helps to soften the impact of the A113’s construction. You can now walk, cycle, or even ride a horse along the A113 towards Schönefeld. What was once the Berlin Wall is now a vibrant, green space.

Imagine 2,500 newly planted trees. They now grow where the Berlin Wall once stood. The Autobahn even runs through tunnels beneath us. The tunnel roofs are covered in greenery, becoming part of the park. This design reduces noise for local residents. The costs amounted to around 16 million euros.

The Landschaftspark Rudow-Altglienicke features a small gravel lake. You can also see remnants of the Berlin Wall. The Rudower Höhe lies above the Autobahn tunnel. An orchard and a field of wildflowers bloom east of the tunnel.

Have you spotted the water buffalo yet? They graze peacefully in the meadows during summer. Their wallowing creates habitats. These habitats are perfect for amphibians and dragonflies. They also support unique plant species. Look out for the marsh marigold and the swamp forget-me-not.

The Glienicker Fenster is a highlight. It’s an embankment up to five meters high covered in wild vines. From here, enjoy views of the park. You will see meadows, pastures and the Massantepfuhl. This pond was once filled in but has since been restored.

Interestingly, the Teltower Dörferweg runs through the park. It is one of Berlin’s 20 main green routes. A 2.1-kilometer section of the Berlin Mauerweg also passes through here. This underscores the park’s role in reuniting divided areas.

The Landschaftspark Rudow-Altglienicke is more than just a park. It’s a symbol of reunification. It demonstrates how infrastructure and nature can coexist. As you explore, consider the park’s unique history. The park is a reminder of Berlin’s past and a vision for its future.
