Across the street from us, Landing Lights Park isn’t your typical urban oasis. It’s a peculiar, fragmented green space. Landing Lights Park stretches diagonally across several blocks. It ends abruptly at the edge of LaGuardia Airport’s runway. The park’s unusual layout is directly tied to the airport’s presence. Landing Lights Park was created in 1958 due to Federal Aviation Administration regulations. These regulations require clear land in the approach paths to runways. The Port Authority, which manages LaGuardia, surrendered nine parcels of land to the city. These parcels became the scattered pieces of Landing Lights Park. The park’s existence confirms with the FAA’s rules and provides a unique recreational area for residents. The landing lights themselves extend into the park. They are a constant reminder of the airport’s proximity. Residents can enjoy the open air. But they must be mindful of the fenced-off areas around the landing lights. Planes fly overhead with remarkable frequency, sometimes every two minutes. Landing Lights Park offers a front-row seat to the constant activity of LaGuardia Airport. It’s a unique blend of urban park and aviation spectacle. Before LaGuardia expanded and took its current name, it was a small private landing strip. The airport dates back to 1929. It gained its name from former New York City mayor Fiorello La Guardia. In 1935, Mayor La Guardia selected the site for a new airport. It opened in 1939 as the New York Municipal Airport after a $23 million renovation. This equates to over $400 million today. Landing Lights Park represents a curious intersection of aviation history and urban planning. It’s a testament to how regulations can shape the landscape and create unusual urban spaces.
