“Wow what a grand old house” I hear you whisper. That’s Landhaus Mahr. This isn’t just any house. It’s a piece of Hamburg history.

Built in 1911 and 1912 Landhaus Mahr was originally a summer residence. It was designed by architects Hermann Distel and August Grubitz. The original owner was the contractor H T Mahr. He spared no expense. The construction cost was 80000 Marks. This doesn’t include the cost of the stables and outhouses. Imagine the luxury.

Landhaus Mahr wasn’t always a quiet retreat. After World War I the ownership changed several times. During the Nazi era it served as an old people’s home. Later it became a women’s club. After World War II it became a children’s home. The grounds were quite extensive. It included a two-hectare park. The park was symmetrically designed around the main building. Sadly much of that park is gone now.

In 1982 a fascinating chapter began. A large commune known as Wohnmodell Kritenbarg moved in. This group needed a new home. Their old one was demolished to make way for the Alstertal Shopping Center. Twenty-four adults and twenty-two children lived at Landhaus Mahr for a time. They even made a film about their unconventional lifestyle.

The Landhaus Mahr has seen its share of ups and downs. There were legal battles and near sales. The house stood empty for a while. It even suffered damage and disrepair. This landmark nearly crumbled. But community efforts and a final approval for renovation saved Landhaus Mahr from being lost forever.

Today Landhaus Mahr is being renovated once again. This time it is planned as residential units. Its future seems secure. It stands as a testament to Hamburg’s resilience and the power of community. As we continue our tour you will encounter many fascinating places. Yet Landhaus Mahr remains truly special. It has a story to tell. A story of families communes and battles fought and won. Remember this unique building. Its tale is not over yet.
