Deep within the Potsdam Parforceheide, a place teeming with royal history and scientific intrigue, lies Landgut Eule. This unassuming estate, nestled at Kremnitzufer 49-51, holds within its walls tales that span centuries. Landgut Eule began its life in 1725, not as a grand estate, but as a humble dwelling for the gamekeepers of King Friedrich Wilhelm I. Imagine these men, tasked with overseeing the royal hunting grounds, the very same Parforceheide that surrounds us today. Their home, Landgut Eule, was a vital part of the king’s elaborate hunting system. However, the reign of Friedrich the Great brought a change of purpose for Landgut Eule. With the new king’s disinterest in hunting, the estate transitioned from a gamekeeper’s lodge to a settler’s homestead. By 1850, a Berlin carpenter had taken ownership, transforming Landgut Eule into a charming guesthouse for summer visitors. The late 19th century saw the Prussian treasury acquire the property. Landgut Eule was repurposed once more, this time as a “Center for Scientific and Technical Investigations,” focusing primarily on experiments with explosives. The early 20th century brought with it the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gesellschaft, who established the Institute for Metal Research within Landgut Eule’s walls. This scientific legacy continued with the Technical University establishing the Neubabelsberg High Voltage Institute here in 1933, even conducting lightning experiments on the grounds. Following World War II, a sad chapter unfolded for Landgut Eule. The estate was divided, with the main house and several outbuildings falling within the Soviet occupation zone. These structures met their end through demolition. The remaining smaller section, including the buildings we see today, was placed under the administration of the Berlin Technical University. The original house, dating back to around 1800, served as a residence. From 1970, it became the home of Mrs. General and her family, until 2016 when the property was purchased and transformed into apartments and event spaces. Landgut Eule stands today as a testament to the ever-changing tides of history. From humble beginnings as a gamekeeper’s home to a center of scientific exploration, this estate has witnessed and adapted to the whims of kings, scientists, and time itself.
