From a simple courtroom, justice echoes through the centuries. Here stands the Landgericht Freiburg, a place where lives intersect and destinies are shaped. The Landgericht Freiburg isn’t just a building. It’s a living testament to the pursuit of justice, echoing with the voices of countless trials and verdicts. Located in the heart of Freiburg im Breisgau, on Salzstraße 17, the Landgericht Freiburg serves a population of approximately 780,000 people. Its jurisdiction extends across ten Amtsgerichte, including Breisach, Emmendingen, and Lörrach. The Landgericht Freiburg occupies a unique space. It resides within the historic Palais Sickingen and shares space with the Oberlandesgericht Karlsruhe in the former Deutschordenskommende. The Palais Sickingen, once the residence of Baden’s Grand Dukes, was meticulously reconstructed after wartime destruction. Behind its faithfully restored façade lies a modern interior, a blend of the old and new. The Landgericht’s presence in this historic building adds another layer to its story, linking the pursuit of justice to the city’s rich past. The Landgericht Freiburg isn’t static. It’s constantly evolving, adapting to the changing times. A major renovation is planned for the Palais Sickingen, a testament to the ongoing commitment to maintaining this vital institution. During the renovation, court proceedings will be distributed across various locations, ensuring the continued pursuit of justice. The Landgericht Freiburg’s history stretches back to the early 19th century. It originated as the Hofgericht des Oberrheinkreises in 1807. Its jurisdiction once covered a vast area, including cities like Waldshut and St. Blasien. The court’s name changed over time, reflecting the changing political landscape. It became the Kreis- und Hofgericht in 1864 and finally the Landgericht Freiburg with the enactment of the Reichsjustizgesetze in 1879. The Landgericht Freiburg has witnessed countless trials, each a unique story of human drama and conflict. It’s a place where the scales of justice are carefully balanced, a symbol of the rule of law in Freiburg im Breisgau.
