In 1879, the imposing Landgericht Erfurt opened its doors. This wasn’t Erfurt’s first dance with the law. The city held court as far back as the 14th century. Imagine trials unfolding right here in the open air of the Domplatz, long before this grand neo-Gothic structure graced the square. The Landgericht Erfurt stands as a testament to Erfurt’s enduring role in the legal landscape of Thuringia. This building, completed between 1874 and 1879, was designed by the Prussian government architect Adolf Borchers. The neo-Gothic style reflects the prevailing architectural trends of the late 19th century. Did you know this very ground once housed the Louisenthal, destroyed by Prussian shelling in 1813? The construction of the Landgericht Erfurt cost over one million marks, a hefty sum at the time. The building was designed to accommodate a president, two directors, seven judges, and three state prosecutors. The Landgericht Erfurt’s jurisdiction covers a significant area, including the districts of Apolda, Arnstadt, Erfurt, Gotha, Sömmerda, and Weimar. It oversees the Amtsgerichte (district courts) within these districts. Above the Landgericht Erfurt in the judicial hierarchy is the Thuringian Higher Regional Court in Jena, and ultimately, the Federal Court of Justice. Interestingly, three of the original judges were appointed by Schwarzburg-Sondershausen, reflecting the complex political landscape before Thuringia’s unification. The Landgericht Erfurt has weathered its own share of historical shifts. Following World War II, it was placed under the jurisdiction of the Higher Regional Court in Jena. During the GDR era, it became the Bezirksgericht (district court) for the entire Erfurt district. After German reunification, the Landgericht Erfurt was re-established in its current form in 1993. Due to renovations, the court temporarily relocated in 2022 to the “Altes Postscheckamt” while its historic home undergoes extensive restoration. The Landgericht Erfurt stands as a silent observer of the city’s evolution, a tangible link to its legal past and present.
