Student voices shape North Rhine-Westphalia. The Landesschüler*innenvertretung NRW or LSV NRW stands here. It is a powerful symbol of student advocacy. LSV NRW represents about 2.5 million students in North Rhine-Westphalia. Established in 1975, the LSV NRW acts as an advocate for students. It ensures their voices are heard.
The LSV NRW evolved from SMV-NRW. Its work is based on the North Rhine-Westphalian School Act. The LSV NRW statute guides its mission. The LSV NRW’s core principle outlines its goals.
Let’s talk about a controversial moment. In 1996, the LSV NRW organized a “Democracy Camp.” Its motto was provocative. It stated “We shit on your democracy”. About 120 students participated. The event was funded by the Ministry of Education. The CDU and the Ministry of Education criticized the camp.
Fast forward to March 13, 2024. The LSV NRW organized a statewide education protest. Thousands of people protested in eleven cities. They voiced the LSV’s demands.
The LSV NRW has several key responsibilities. It supports regional student representation through BSVen. BSVen are district student representatives. The LSV advocates for student interests. It communicates with the Ministry of School and Education. It promotes grassroots initiatives. The LSV fulfills its duties under the School Act.
The LSV NRW has a clear structure. It represents various school types. This includes primary schools and secondary schools. It includes vocational colleges and special schools.
The LSV NRW comprises several bodies. There is the State Delegates Conference. There is the State Executive Board. A State Secretariat exists. State liaison teachers contribute. A Finance Committee manages funds.
The State Delegates Conference or LDK is the highest decision-making body. It sets the LSV’s guidelines. It makes final decisions on all matters. Delegates from district student councils vote at the LDK. Each BSV receives a mandate per 15000 students. The LDK typically meets three times a year. Each session lasts three days.
District student councils unite students. They come from districts or independent cities. Individual schools usually have one delegate. This applies per 250 students. The BDKs elect a board. They choose a state delegation. This delegation represents the BSV at the state level.
Up to ten students are elected to the State Executive Board by the LDK. At least five must be female. The State Executive Board can co-opt additional students for support.
The State Secretariat supports the State Executive Board. It manages the LSV NRW office in Düsseldorf. State liaison teachers offer advice within the association.
The Finance Committee is an independent association. It manages the finances. The 10 State Executive Board members are on the Finance Committee. Up to four state liaison teachers participate. Up to two additional students elected by the LDK are included. The Finance Committee elects a management board. This board consists of two students and two teachers.
The LSV NRW is not a member of the Federal Student Conference.
