Did you know the Land- und Amtsgericht Hamburg wasn’t always this imposing? In 1879 three Amtsgerichte existed in Hamburg. Hamburg Ritzebüttel and Bergedorf. The Greater Hamburg Act of 1937 brought significant changes. Cuxhaven was excluded. Altona’s district added Altona Blankenese and Wandsbek. Harburg-Wilhelmsburg also joined from Stade’s district. More Amtsgerichte followed. Barmbek joined in 2002. St. Georg followed in 2003. The Land- und Amtsgericht Hamburg grew to accommodate a growing city. Its responsibilities expanded.

The building itself is a testament to architectural history. Designed by Carl Johann Christian Zimmermann it opened in 1898. Its construction reflects the era’s architectural style. It houses not only the Amtsgericht but also the Landgericht. The Hanseatic Higher Regional Court also resides here. A true hub of justice.

One intriguing case involved the Hamburger Containerschiff Courier. In March 2009 the Amtsgericht Hamburg issued arrest warrants. The warrants were for nine Somalis. The German Navy captured them in the Red Sea. The accusations were attacks on sea traffic. The case ended unexpectedly. Due to an agreement the suspects were transferred to Kenyan justice. They were released in 2010 due to lack of jurisdiction.

However another case involving the Taipan proceeded. Arrest warrants from April 2010 targeted ten Somalis. The Landgericht Hamburg sentenced them in 2012. The sentences ranged from six to seven years imprisonment. There was also a two-year youth sentence.
