Remember the year 1998. It was when Kuala Lumpur hosted the Commonwealth Games. This is Laman Comanwel. It stands as a reminder of that historic event.

The 1998 Commonwealth Games marked a significant milestone. They were the first held in Asia. It was also the last Commonwealth Games of the 20th century. Kuala Lumpur was selected to host the games in 1992. The games took place from September 11 to 21.

Laman Comanwel commemorates Malaysia’s role as host. Around 3638 athletes from 70 nations participated. There were 214 events in 15 sports. For the first time, team sports were included. This made the games even more exciting.

Malaysia achieved its best-ever haul of ten gold medals. This was later surpassed in the 2010 Commonwealth Games. At that event, Malaysia won twelve gold medals.

The opening ceremony was a grand spectacle. It took place on September 11 at Bukit Jalil National Stadium. It began with a pre-show concert. Malaysian pop singers entertained the crowd. There were also performances by local comedians.

The ceremony included a parade of nations. Dignitaries attended the event. The Yang di-Pertuan Agong officially opened the games. He struck a gong three times. Fireworks and a 16-gun salute followed. The Commonwealth Games flag was raised. The theme song of the games played. It was called “Forever as One”.

The closing ceremony was equally memorable. It took place on September 21. Queen Elizabeth and the King of Malaysia attended. There were cultural performances and speeches. The Commonwealth Games flag was lowered and handed over.

The mascot for the 1998 Commonwealth Games was an orangutan. It was named Wira meaning “warrior” or “hero”. The orangutan represented Malaysia’s friendly personality. It also symbolized the athletes’ charm and intelligence.

The logo featured the hibiscus a national flower. It was the first games logo to use the color yellow. The colors red blue white and yellow represented the Malaysian flag. They also symbolized Malaysia as a confident dynamic nation.

The 1998 Commonwealth Games boosted Malaysia’s image. The games brought people together. They fostered a spirit of sportsmanship. Laman Comanwel stands as a tribute to this unity.
