Amidst the manicured greens of Delhi’s exclusive Golf Club, two elegant structures whisper tales of the Mughal era. The Lal Bangla Mausoleums, shrouded in mystery and intrigue, stand as a testament to a bygone era. These often-overlooked gems offer a glimpse into the lives and loves of those who once graced the Mughal court. The Lal Bangla Mausoleums, named for their striking red and yellow sandstone construction, are believed to house the remains of prominent figures from the late Mughal period. One theory suggests they are the final resting place of Zinat Mahal Sahiba, affectionately known as Lal Kunwar, and her daughter, Begum Jaan, mother and daughter of Emperor Shah Alam II. Another theory links the mausoleums to a different Lal Kunwar, a captivating courtesan who held sway over Emperor Jahandar Shah. This Lal Kunwar’s influence over the emperor was immense, though their reign was short-lived. Adding to the enigma, the northern mausoleum contains two tombs, but their occupants remain uncertain. This has led to much speculation and debate among historians. The southern mausoleum, nearly identical to its northern counterpart but featuring delicate jali windows, presents another puzzle. It stands empty, devoid of any tombs today. Records indicate that at least one tomb was removed, possibly belonging to a Begum Jaan, though whether it was Shah Alam II’s daughter or another individual remains unclear. Some scholars even suggest the presence of additional graves, further deepening the mystery surrounding the Lal Bangla Mausoleums. The very name, “Lal Bangla,” adds a layer of fascination. It’s thought to derive from the prevalent use of red sandstone, also known as “lal” in Hindi, in its construction, possibly associated with the name of one of the Lal Kunwars. The mausoleums, built on low platforms, feature central square rooms and open halls supported by stone pillars and pilasters. Later Mughal-style domes and small corner rooms complete their architectural layout. Their design bears similarities to the nearby Tomb of Safdarjung. Although their history is shrouded in some uncertainty, the Lal Bangla Mausoleums offer a unique and captivating experience. They invite visitors to step back in time and contemplate the grandeur and intrigue of the Mughal era, amidst the tranquility of Delhi’s Golf Club.
