“JAI JAWAN JAI KISAN.” These powerful words resonate within the Lal Bahadur Shastri Memorial. They echo the spirit of the man who uttered them. Right here, at 1, Motilal Nehru Place, we stand before the humble abode of India’s second Prime Minister. Lal Bahadur Shastri Memorial is more than just a building. It’s a testament to a life lived with integrity and simplicity. Shastriji, as he was affectionately known, resided in this very house, this “typical Lutyen’s Bungalow”, from 1952 until his untimely demise in 1966. He occupied various ministerial positions, overseeing Railways, Communication, Commerce and Industry, and even Home Affairs, all within these walls. Even upon becoming Prime Minister in 1964, he chose to remain here, eschewing the grandeur of a larger residence. The Lal Bahadur Shastri Memorial breathes with the essence of the man himself. The building, with its unassuming elegance, reflects his down-to-earth nature. The memorial preserves not only the memory of Shastriji but also that of his wife, Lalita Shastri. The space is a harmonious blend of their personalities. The sprawling lawn outside once served as Shastriji’s meeting place. He would engage with the public on the open lawn. Under the shade of the trees, he held discussions with officials, attending to his paperwork. The orchard stands as a symbol of his enduring slogan, “JAI JAWAN JAI KISAN” – Hail the soldier, hail the farmer. His modest 1964 Fiat car, purchased with a loan, sits on display at the back portico, a testament to his unpretentious lifestyle. Inside the Lal Bahadur Shastri Memorial, each room offers a glimpse into Shastriji’s personal life. The drawing room, the anteroom, the bedroom with its private verandah: all whisper stories of a life lived with humility. A small bedroom, sparsely furnished, underscores his philosophy of simple living and high thinking. Lalita Shastri’s prayer hall and kitchen have been carefully restored, preserving their original charm. The memorial also showcases Shastriji’s socio-political life through photographs, souvenirs, and art objects. His personal effects, including his Khadi clothes, a woolen coat gifted by Jawaharlal Nehru, his pen, and wooden slippers, offer an intimate connection to the man. His office chamber, with the desk and chair where pivotal decisions were made, stands as a silent witness to history. Here, within the Lal Bahadur Shastri Memorial, we connect with a leader who led with quiet strength and unwavering principles, a man honored with the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award.
