Established in 1928 Lakewood High School initially shared a campus with elementary and junior high schools. It was located at 7655 W 10th Avenue. In 1958 Lakewood High School moved to its current location at 9700 W 8th Avenue. The old site became the Jefferson County Open School in 1989. Lakewood High School is more than just a building. It’s a place where history unfolds. It’s where futures are shaped.
A major renovation project took place from 2006 to 2007. This resulted in a brand-new school building. The project cost over $35 million thanks to a 2004 bond issue. Students even helped teachers move into the new building.
Lakewood High School’s unique traditions are a big part of its appeal. One of these is the Spoon Game. It is a student-organized tag game played by upperclassmen. Students try to eliminate each other using spoons. The game has been running annually since 2010. It was only interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.
In 2013 Lakewood High School created a lip-dub video for Katy Perry’s song Roar. The video went viral. It garnered millions of views on Vimeo and YouTube. This led to a private concert at the school by Katy Perry herself. The concert was a memorable reward for the school’s creative efforts.
