Did you know that Lake View Terrace was once part of Rancho Tujunga a vast Mexican land grant? Lake View Terrace is a unique neighborhood nestled in the San Fernando Valley. This quiet equestrian community boasts a rich history. Homer and Marie Hansen established a horse ranch in the 1800s. Their peaceful existence was disrupted in 1939. The US Army Corps of Engineers seized their land. They needed to build Hansen Dam to control the frequent flooding. The dam was finished in 1940. It transformed the landscape. Legend says Lake View Terrace’s name comes from Holiday Lake. This 150-acre lake was once behind the dam. It was a popular spot in the 1950s but eventually dried up. Lake View Terrace is also unfortunately remembered for the Rodney King incident in 1991. This event brought unwanted notoriety to the area. But Lake View Terrace is more than just its history. It offers a surprisingly diverse landscape. The western side is more urban with high-density housing. The eastern side retains a rural feel. Homes here are specifically zoned for horses. Residents fiercely protect this unique atmosphere. They’ve fought many battles to preserve their semirural lifestyle. They successfully persuaded the Regional Water Quality Control Board to clean up construction debris near Hansen Dam. Lake View Terrace has a thriving equestrian community. It’s one of the few places in Los Angeles where you can live with horses. Real estate agent Omari Mark called Lake View Terrace a hidden gem. He noted that houses were less expensive than in nearby Sylmar or Tujunga. This is mainly because Lake View Terrace is less well-known. The community has a laid-back feel. As Carol Ford the president of the Valley Horse Owners Association once said If you don’t like the smell of livestock you shouldn’t move here. Lake View Terrace offers outdoor recreation. There are equestrian trails parks recreation centers and even golf courses. The Hansen Dam area is a focal point. It provides a recreation lake a swimming lake and plenty of picnic areas. The area also hosted many film productions. From Easy Rider to Terminator 2 Lake View Terrace has seen its share of Hollywood action. Lake View Terrace’s unique blend of history culture and rural charm makes it a captivating place. It is a true hidden gem in the heart of Los Angeles.
