“Why, it’s right next door to the dirt lot where that young man, Rodney King, got beat up by those officers”. Those words once helped taxi drivers find their way. Today we stand at Lake View Terrace Triangle. Established in 1961, this triangle at Osborne Street and Foothill Boulevard marks a place with a complex history.
Lake View Terrace itself is a suburban neighborhood. It sits in the San Fernando Valley region of Los Angeles. The area is known for its equestrian community. It is one of the few places in Los Angeles where homes can be zoned for horsekeeping. But Lake View Terrace holds more than just horses and houses.
Once, this area was part of Rancho Tujunga. Settlers sold firewood to El Pueblo. That settlement is now Los Angeles. Later, Homer and Marie Hansen established a horse ranch here.
In 1939, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers took the ranch land. They used eminent domain to build a dam. This was to prevent flooding in the San Fernando Valley. The Hansen Dam was completed in 1940.
Legend says Lake View Terrace got its name from Holiday Lake. This 150-acre lake was behind the dam. It was a popular vacation spot in the 1950s but the lake has since dried up.
The Rodney King incident in 1991 brought notoriety to Lake View Terrace. A vacant lot at Osborne Street and Foothill Boulevard became a landmark. It marked the site where Rodney King was beaten by Los Angeles police officers. This event triggered riots across the nation.
In 2005, a real estate agent called Lake View Terrace “a hidden area”. Houses here were less expensive than in Sylmar and Tujunga. This was because those neighborhoods were better known.
Lake View Terrace maintains a rural feel. As Carol Ford once said, “If you don’t like the smell of livestock, you shouldn’t move here.” The area has been used in many films, including “Easy Rider” and “Terminator 2”.
Today, Lake View Terrace Triangle stands as a reminder of the past. It connects to community beautification. It also recalls a time of great turmoil. It is a place where history and community converge. Though the events of the past linger, Lake View Terrace has moved forward. It offers a blend of rural charm and suburban life. The triangle serves as a quiet marker. It is a testament to a community’s enduring spirit.
