Salty air whispers secrets of Lake Saint Catherine. Before you lies a brackish expanse. This isn’t just any lake. Lake Saint Catherine holds a unique place in New Orleans history. It sits nestled between Lake Pontchartrain and Lake Borgne. Originally a haven for railroad workers trappers hunters and fishermen.

The original Town of Lake Catherine flourished here. It thrived between Unknown Pass and Miller’s Ditch. Imagine the bustling community. The rhythmic chug of the train and the sounds of nets cast into the water.

This tranquility was shattered by the 1915 Hurricane. Thirty-five lives were lost. The storm devastated the town. Yet from the wreckage new life emerged. Hunting and fishing clubs sprung up. The Rigolets Train Station became a vital hub. Even during the Great Depression the Winchester Club a gentlemen’s club and others offered respite. They provided lodging for families and sportsmen. Many families maintained camps here. Generations of railroad workers lived and labored nearby. They supported the vital rail line running along the lake. Mr Acy was the last known resident of the town.

The New Orleans East Land Bridge lies north. It connects Lake Saint Catherine and Lake Pontchartrain. This nine-mile stretch was heavily populated since the 1920s. Marinas taverns restaurants boat yards all dotted the landscape. Before Katrina the area’s population was 754. Labor Day weekends saw numbers swell to two or three thousand. Friends and family gathered. They celebrated the last big weekend before the winter chill set in.

Lake Saint Catherine is shallow. Several inlets feed its waters. Fort Pike Canal Sawmill Pass Marques Canal Unknown Pass Miller’s Pass St Catherine Pass and Counterfeit Pass all contribute. The lake offers rich fishing. It’s abundant in crabs clams and shrimp. The surrounding ponds are perfect hunting grounds for ducks and geese.

Hurricane Katrina in 2005 inflicted heavy damage. Two lives were sadly lost. Father Arthur Ginart known as Father Red perished. He chose to stay in his church St Nicholas of Myra near Chef Menteur Pass. Wayne Aaslestad also lost his life. He remained at home. He was found in his car in Lake Pontchartrain. He was likely trying to evacuate too late.
