Deep in the heart of Detroit, nestled within Belle Isle Park, lies the tranquil oasis of Lake Okonoka. It’s a 24-acre, man-made lake, a popular spot for fishing and paddling. But Lake Okonoka holds a secret, a story of transformation. It wasn’t always the serene retreat you see today. Once cut off from the lifeblood of the Detroit River, it suffered from stagnation. Then, a remarkable restoration project breathed new life into Lake Okonoka.

The project, a collaborative effort spearheaded by the Friends of the Detroit River and supported by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, began in 2014. The first step was revitalizing the nearby Blue Heron Lagoon, opening it to the Detroit River. This allowed fresh water and Great Lakes fish to flow in. Then, attention turned to Lake Okonoka itself. A vital connection was forged between the lake and the revitalized Blue Heron Lagoon. A new bridge on Lakeside Drive spans this channel, allowing paddlers to glide effortlessly between the two bodies of water.

But the transformation didn’t stop there. The restoration delved deeper, quite literally. Dredging deepened the lake, creating deeper pools and channels that offer fish refuge, regardless of water level fluctuations. These changes ensure a healthy environment for fish movement and survival. Gravel spawning beds were added, providing vital breeding grounds for various fish species. And to complete the connection, a new culvert links Lake Okonoka directly to the Detroit River on the island’s south shore.

This free flow of water between the river, the lagoon, and Lake Okonoka brings more than just ecological benefits. It has also enhanced the recreational opportunities. Paddlers can now enjoy a continuous waterway, exploring the diverse environments. Fishing has improved, with the influx of Great Lakes fish. Even the surrounding areas have been touched by the restoration. A wet meadow now connects the lake to the rare wet-mesic flatwoods forest, providing a vital corridor for pollinators and other wildlife.

The Lake Okonoka restoration project is more than just a local success story. It stands as a testament to the power of collaboration and the importance of restoring our natural spaces. It serves as a shining example of the ongoing efforts to delist the Detroit River as an Area of Concern. So, the next time you find yourself at Lake Okonoka, take a moment to appreciate the tranquility. Remember the story of its transformation, a journey from stagnation to vibrant life.
