Ever wondered about the story behind this sparkling lake? Lake Miramar is more than just a pretty view. It is a vital part of San Diego’s water system and a beloved recreation spot.

Completed in 1960, Lake Miramar was a key part of the second San Diego Aqueduct project. The lake receives water from both the Colorado River Aqueduct and the California Aqueduct. This water travels a long way to reach us, thanks to the San Diego County Water Authority. The Miramar Dam, an earthen embankment, stands 165 feet tall.

Locals often call it Lake Miramar or Miramar Lake. The area offers many activities. You can boat, fish, or enjoy a picnic. A 5-mile trail loops around the lake. This makes it perfect for walking, jogging, and cycling. The trail section over the dam was closed after the September 11 attacks for security. It reopened in 2007 and provides amazing views. From here, you can see Mira Mesa and University City. You can also see other northern San Diego communities.

Lake Miramar is not just for recreation. The Miramar Water Treatment Plant was completed in 1962. It serves about 500,000 customers in northern San Diego. A major upgrade to the plant finished in 2011. This included new chlorine and ozone disinfection facilities.

If you’re into cycling, Lake Miramar offers a great experience. The 5-mile loop is mostly flat. The western and southern ends are straight. They offer clear views of San Diego. The eastern part of the loop is more winding. This adds some variety to your ride. There is a 10 mph speed limit.

Fishing is popular here. Lake Miramar is stocked with various fish. You might catch largemouth bass or crappie. Bluegill, channel catfish, sunfish, and trout are also present. Be aware of size limits. The minimum size for bass is 15 inches. For crappie, it is 10 inches. Also, a California State Fishing license is required if you are 16 years or older.

For a day of family fun, Lake Miramar has you covered. There are picnic tables and barbecues available. Remember some rules. Ground fires, glass containers, and camping are not allowed. The picnic area and perimeter road are open daily. Vehicles are allowed on the road Saturday through Tuesday.

Originally, the area was owned by E.W. Scripps and his sister Ellen Browning Scripps. They named it Miramar. This means “Sea View”. At that time, the ocean was visible from here.

Keep an eye out for birds. Cormorants, pelicans, and mallards are common. You might also spot ruddy ducks. Plant lovers will appreciate the variety too. Look for chamise, black sage, and manzanita.

So, next time you visit Lake Miramar, remember its history. It is more than just a lake. It is a vital resource and a place for the community to gather.
