Lake Mead NRA includes Lake Mead and the smaller Lake Mohave. These reservoirs were formed by the Hoover Dam and Davis Dam. The recreation area also encompasses the surrounding desert terrain and wilderness.

Lake Mead’s formation began in 1935. This was less than a year before Hoover Dam’s completion. Initially, in 1933, the area was protected as a bird refuge. It became the first National Recreation Area designated by the U.S. Congress.

About 200,000 acres are managed separately. This is under the Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument established in 2000. Water covers about 186,000 acres of the recreation area.

Lake Mead NRA is home to three desert ecosystems. The Mojave Desert, Great Basin Desert and Sonoran Desert converge here. Tours of Hoover Dam are a major attraction. They are administered by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation.
