“Fourth milestone” That’s what Lak Si means. This unassuming name hides a rich history. We stand before a place steeped in the legacy of King Chulalongkorn. His reign saw the construction of Khlong Prem Prachakon canal. This waterway linked Bangkok to Bang Pa-in. Lak Si marked its fourth milestone.

Lak Si is more than just a geographical marker. It’s one of Bangkok’s 50 districts. It has two sub-districts Thung Song Hong and Talat Bang Khen. Lak Si became a district in 1997. Before that it was part of Don Mueang District.

Lak Si’s location near Don Mueang airport influences its character. Many residents work at the airport. The district is relatively quiet. Shopping is limited to local stores. The nearest large shopping mall is quite far away. There aren’t many major tourist attractions here. That doesn’t make it any less significant.

Lak Si holds a unique place in Bangkok’s transportation history. Lak Si station is an important transit hub. It serves both the SRT Dark Red Line and the MRT Pink Line. It opened in 1898 as part of Thailand’s first railway. The original station was demolished in 1990. A new elevated station opened in 2021. In 2023 it became an interchange station for the Pink Line. The old ground-level station closed. Long-distance trains no longer operate from there.

Lak Si’s story is one of transformation. It’s a story of progress and change. It started as a marker on a canal. Today it’s a vital district and transport center. While it may not boast dazzling tourist attractions its quiet strength resonates. It speaks volumes about Bangkok’s evolving identity. Lak Si represents the quiet heart of Bangkok’s growth. It’s a place of quiet strength. A reminder of the past shaping the present.
