Consider this: A bridge exclusively for cyclists and pedestrians gracefully arching over railway tracks. That is the Lahmeyerbrücke. This bridge in Frankfurt’s east connects the Riederwald settlement to the commercial areas along Hanauer Landstraße.

The Lahmeyerbrücke stands as a testament to Frankfurt’s commitment to modern infrastructure. It supports both pedestrians and cyclists. The bridge ensures a seamless link between communities.

Once upon a time, the old Lahmeyerbrücke stood. It had served its purpose since the era of industrial production. However, time took its toll. An upgrade was necessary to meet today’s needs. The city decided to invest in a new bridge.

The new Lahmeyerbrücke runs parallel to where the old one stood. For a short time, both bridges stood side by side. This juxtaposition symbolized Frankfurt’s blend of history and progress. The new Lahmeyerbrücke is wider than its predecessor. It measures a comfortable four meters. It offers barrier-free access from both sides. Cyclists can now traverse without dismounting.

Klaus Oesterling, the transport minister, officially opened the new Lahmeyerbrücke. He emphasized its importance for improving conditions. It saves time, energy, and stress for daily commuters.

The bridge’s design is noteworthy. The Lahmeyerbrücke retains the curved shape of the old bridge. Its length spans approximately 160 meters. Weather-resistant Corten steel forms the base. Precast concrete elements, further reinforced with concrete, add to its durability. The structure rests on two concrete abutments and two round steel supports.

The Lahmeyerbrücke also boasts an integrated lighting system. The lighting is in the handrail. This illuminates the path. It creates a pleasant ambiance during the evening hours. The lights use a color temperature of 3000K. This complements the Corten steel.

The entire Lahmeyerbrücke project cost around 10 million euros. The state of Hesse contributed 2.6 million euros. This reflects the importance of such infrastructure improvements.

However, there was a temporary setback during construction. The cycle path running under the bridge had to be closed. Construction work blocked the path. This path was an alternative route between Ostpark and Mainkur. Unfortunately, its reopening is not yet in sight.

The Lahmeyerbrücke is more than just a crossing. It embodies Frankfurt’s vision for the future. The bridge’s construction considered the Nordmainische S-Bahn. This shows the complexity of urban transport planning. The Lahmeyerbrücke stands as a symbol of connectivity. It stands as a symbol of progress in Frankfurt.
