Across the plains of Paracuellos de Jarama, the Lagunas de Belvis shimmer. These aren’t naturally formed lakes. They were born from human activity. From the 1950s to the late 1980s, this area buzzed with industry. Gravel and sand were extracted from the Jarama riverbed. When the work finished, nature reclaimed the land. Groundwater filled the excavated pits, creating the 26 small lakes we see today, collectively known as the Lagunas de Belvis. The Comunidad de Madrid recognized their ecological importance. They designated the Lagunas de Belvis as wetlands of special interest under Law 7/90. This law, enacted on June 28th, protects these unique, man-made havens. Now, the Lagunas de Belvis teem with life. The surrounding area has become a haven for riparian vegetation. In some places, it’s almost impenetrable. This lush environment attracts a variety of bird species. It’s a vital breeding ground and a welcome stop for migrating birds. These wetlands play a crucial role in the ecosystem. They filter nutrients and pollutants from the Jarama River. They provide a sanctuary for aquatic birds, especially given the decline of natural wetlands in the region. The Lagunas de Belvis offer a peaceful escape from the city. They’re a popular spot for picnics, fishing, leisurely walks, and birdwatching. As we stand here, surrounded by the tranquility of the Lagunas de Belvis, we’re reminded of the power of nature to adapt and thrive, even in unexpected places.
