While many flock to the bustling souks and vibrant streets of Agadir, just outside the city lies a world of tranquility and natural wonder at Massa Lagoon. This isn’t your typical mountain trek through the High Atlas. Here, the landscape unfolds in rolling hills, part of what’s known as the Anti Atlas region. Massa Lagoon itself is a unique ecosystem, a freshwater lagoon fed by a river yet separated from the sea by a protective barrier of sand dunes. This distinctive environment has earned Massa Lagoon the title of the best bird reserve in Morocco. Hundreds of bird species call this place home or use it as a vital stopover during their migrations. You might spot graceful flamingos wading in the shallows or avocets with their elegant, upturned bills. Ducks of different varieties dabble in the water, and if you’re lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of a sandgrouse, especially in the mornings.
