Hidden within the vibrant outskirts of Kuala Lumpur, Lagong Hill rises as a green sanctuary. It’s a vital forest corridor, connecting the Titiwangsa Range to the bustling Klang Valley. Lagong Hill stands proudly as Kuala Lumpur’s highest hill, reaching an elevation of 572 meters. Multiple trails crisscross its slopes. They offer a perfect half-day escape for those seeking breathtaking viewpoints or the challenge of reaching the true summit. The popularity of Lagong Hill is essential for its preservation. Several quarries already scar its northern side, generating negative press and highlighting the importance of public interest in protecting this natural treasure. A popular starting point for exploring Lagong Hill is near Selayang, where Taman Rimba Bukit Lagong is clearly signposted. Many visitors are drawn to the Orang Asli village at the base of the hill, seeking the refreshing waters of the river. However, for those aiming for the summit, a less conspicuous track branches off Jalan Bukit Lagong. This old logging track leads to stunning viewpoints overlooking the city. The most rewarding route to the summit of Lagong Hill begins with a right turn onto a smaller track. This path descends, crosses a stream, and joins the trail from the Orang Asli village. It winds through a valley, past small stream crossings and Orang Asli huts. Hikers will eventually reach a col, a natural saddle point, between a hill near the logging road viewpoints and the true summit of Lagong Hill. While the trail is marked, a GPS device and photos at unmarked junctions are recommended. From the col, a single main trail leads to the summit of Lagong Hill. A shallow river crossing adds a touch of wilderness to this urban hike. The summit itself offers an overgrown shelter but no views. The descent via Bukit Nolang offers a more scenic route. It features popular viewpoints and the chance to explore a Marilyn, a hill with a prominence of over 150 meters. Bukit Lagong itself is also a Marilyn. This adds an extra layer of achievement for peak baggers. From Bukit Nolang, the trail descends steeply to more viewpoints. These are particularly popular on weekends and connect to the end of the logging road, making for an easy return to the trailhead. A nearby water pipe offers a welcome refreshment for hikers, especially during the midday heat. The entire circuit can be completed in around four hours, excluding breaks.
