Hidden within the bustling city of Johannesburg, lies a school brimming with stories. Laerskool Jan Celliers isn’t just bricks and mortar. It’s a living testament to the power of dreams and the enduring spirit of the Afrikaans community. Established in 1935, Laerskool Jan Celliers emerged from a vision shared by twelve parents. They yearned for a place where their children could learn and grow, nurtured by their mother tongue. Initially known as the Noordelike Voorstedeskool, this small seed of an idea blossomed. Opening its doors with just 45 students and three teachers, the school adopted green as its color, symbolizing youthful vigor and growth. Its motto, “GROEI” (grow), encapsulates the school’s unwavering commitment to nurturing potential. Laerskool Jan Celliers found its permanent home in Parkview in 1938. Interestingly, this picturesque location was once a rubbish dump. The municipality, at the time, lacked a suitable space. Yet, from this unlikely beginning, the school flourished. The iconic Cape Dutch style building, complete with its Groot Constantia gable, stands as a symbol of resilience and transformation. In 1937, a grand celebration honored the renowned Afrikaans poet, Jan F.E. Cilliers, the school’s namesake. Luminaries like Totius and Anton van Wouw graced the event, alongside 800 attendees. A portrait of Celliers, painted by W.H. Coetzer, was unveiled, further solidifying the school’s connection to its namesake. Laerskool Jan Celliers became a cultural hub. Its grounds expanded thanks to Dr. S. Kuschke, ensuring it could cater to the growing community’s educational needs. Fast forward to 1993, and Laerskool Jan Celliers made history. It became the first Afrikaans medium private school in South Africa. This marked a significant milestone. It affirmed the school’s dedication to providing quality education within a vibrant Afrikaans cultural context. Today, Laerskool Jan Celliers continues to thrive. Its rich history, combined with its dedication to academic excellence, makes it more than just a school. It is a testament to the power of community, the importance of preserving language and culture, and the enduring pursuit of growth.
