Ladywell School currently stands on Victoria Park Drive South. This is in the Scotstoun area of Glasgow. But that is not where the story of Ladywell School began.

Let’s step back in time. We go back to when Ladywell School was on Duke Street. The school served pupils aged 12 to 16. These pupils needed extra learning support.

The Duke Street building has its own story. It was originally Alexander’s School. Ladywell School moved here in the 1970s. It remained until the early 1990s. Anne Bombelli was the last head teacher at Duke Street.

Alexander’s School building is quite impressive. John Burnet Senior designed it in 1858. It was built as part of the R F & J Alexander’s Cotton Thread Mill. The mill is now the Great Eastern Hotel.

The building boasts an Italianate style. It also has Greek revival details. It features a campanile. This is a bell tower that adds to its unique look. The building is made of polished ashlar stone. It has two storeys. A symmetrical design makes it special. Advanced gables sit at each end. Steps lead to an arcaded loggia. This is like an open-sided extension at ground level. Distinctive glazing patterns mark it as original.

The listing details mention a rear range and a boundary wall. Square gatepiers stand at the entrance. These features add to the historical importance of the building. In 1998, it was upgraded to Category A. This recognizes its architectural and historical significance.

Fast forward to today. Ladywell School is now on Victoria Park Drive South. It continues to provide education. It serves children of school age. Ladywell School is listed as a local authority special school.

Ladywell School adapts to meet the needs of its students. It provides a supportive environment. It helps students to achieve their full potential.

So, as you pass by Ladywell School. Remember its journey. From Duke Street to Victoria Park Drive South, it is a Glasgow institution. It is dedicated to education. It changes with the times.
